Are electrically similar to horizontal motors and are designed primarily for driving vertical pumps. In pump applications, vertical motors are most frequently mounted on the pump head. In some cases, as with larger machines, vertical motors are mounted independently of the pump on special bases or foundations. The same degree of enclosure or environmental protection is generally available for both horizontal motors and vertical motors.
Hollow shaft (VHS) are designed primarily to use with deep-well turbine pumps and are usually mounted on the pump discharge head. The motor shaft is hollow so that the pump-head can extend up through the motor and can be coupled to the motor shaft at the upper end.
Solid shaft (VSS) are similar to vertical hollow shaft motors in mechanical construction, except that the motor shaft is solid. A shaft extension is provided at the lower end of the motor. They are available in both "high thrust", "normal thrust", "inline" and "sewage design." Each type is designed for specific applications depending on the thrust requirements and their use.
Squirrel Cage Motors
Induction motors are probably the simplest and most rugged of all electric motors. There are only two main components: the stator and the rotor. The rotor is constructed of a number of conducting bars running parallel to the axis of the motor and two conducting rings on the ends. The stator contains a pattern of copper coils arranged in windings. As alternating current is passed through the windings, a moving magnetic field is formed near the stator. This induces a current in the rotor, creating its own magnetic field. The interaction of these fields produces a torque on the rotor.
Wound Rotor Motors (Slipring)
Suitable for applications requiring frequent stopping and starting, speed control and/or high torque. Applications include ball mills, hammer mills, shredders, rolling mills, cranes, hoists and winches.
